When I Think of Worship....
What do you think about when someone mentions worship. Does your mind race to the music portion of a Sunday morning church service? Or do you think about that special someone or something that you hold in high regard. I believe worship is a word that is used quite a bit to describe many different things to many different people.
When I hear the word worship I am reminded of what the Bible says about worship......and it says a lot. Scripture gives us specific direction as to what worship looks like by telling us stories of great men of God, who though riddled with sin still “danced” before the Lord. It also outlines for us that we were created and called to worship. It’s in our DNA....go to any rock concert or sporting event and you will see and experience first hand the human emotion called worship. People clamoring to get close to the action, see their favorite star, shouting or raising their hands...anything to express their sheer joy of being there...What does your worship look like? Are you joyous about being in God's presence?
The Bible is very clear about who we should worship.....and that is God alone. Now, that is not to say that I don’t have my favorites that I love to hear sing or watch play a sport, but worship... that is reserved for Him and Him alone. We should worship Him because He is God...the great I AM, creator of the universe and provider of all we know. He is both loving and righteous, He gives and He takes away. He is the Alpha and Omega and it is only God who has given his son Jesus who takes away our sin. We should worship Him because He is God.....and we are not.
I am often tempted to worship God because of all the things He has done for us....and He does it all for us. The bible is clear that we are to worship Him because He Is.
Scripture also teaches that we should make our total lives a worship experience. That all we do should reflect Him. Not just for a few minutes over the weekend, but every minute of every day. That requires much. It is why I believe the Bible reminds to keep our minds on Christ always....always thinking about Him, always walking with Him, always talking with Him.....
So...this week as you gather with fellow believers, sing and express your love for Him from a heart that knows God and honors Him for who he is....not only what He has done. Ask Him to show you how you can live, so that your life will reflect that living sacrifice of praise described in scripture. Pray without ceasing, worship without ceasing...It will make a difference....
