Keeping Jesus Tucked Away
We have a friend, (really it is my daughter’s friend but since we have known them for over 15 years, they have become a friend of the whole family), who is a single parent to a 5 year old daughter. While Jordan (my daughter) was over visiting, Abby was showing her all the things she had gotten for Christmas. As she finished showing all of her toys Jordan asked about the purse she was carrying, and Abby replied… “Oh yea, and I have Jesus in my purse!” She opened her purse to reveal a small Christmas ornament with a picture of Jesus on it.
As Jordan told me this story I begin to make a correlation of how often that statement is true.… We keep Jesus neatly tucked away in our purses or wallets until we need him…Then we quickly pull out our “Jesus card”, and expect everything to be ok……How many times are we guilty of praying selfishly wanting God to pick up the pieces of our mistakes and make them go away…or keep us from going through something that is difficult.
I hope that we as believers will understand that Jesus wants to be working in us every moment of every day. He died on the cross so that he could be with us always, not just when we want something, or are in a jam and need Him to bail us out…
My prayer is that we all would connect with the power that seeks to change us and make us more like Christ….Power that causes men and women to see and experience Christ through and with us….Power that only comes from him and suffers no “credit” limit.
