A Commitment to Servitude

One day I decided to sneak away from the office to get a bite of lunch. I decided that I was going to go to one place that my family refuses to go... Captain D’s! You see...I was feeling like my cholesterol was about a quart low. I order my gourmet meal of fish and chicken, battered and fried in grease, and I sit down to savor this healthy meal.

While eating, I noticed a gentleman sitting with his wife (who was confined to a wheelchair and not physically able to feed herself) and he is slowly yet lovingly feeding her each bite followed by a gentle swipe of a napkin to clean up any mess. Then every few bites he would lift her drink to her mouth so she could have a drink. This was not a quick meal for them, in fact he wasn’t even eating himself. But bite after bite, napkin swipe after napkin swipe, sip of drink after sip of drink, they slowly moved through her meal.

Unlike the situation that was playing out before my eyes, I was rushing through my meal, but I caught myself not ready to leave. I simply wanted to stay a watch the scene that was unfolding before my eyes.

Then it hit me! This whole trip was orchestrated by God! He wanted me there to be witness to one of His very special character traits. That of servitude. In those minutes that I thought would be spent enjoying a selfish pleasure, I was hit between the eyes with one of the greatest examples of genuine love I could ever have witnessed.

God spoke and I listened. And here is what I heard from God... “Tommy, are you willing to selflessly  serve people like I showed you today?” The bible says in Ephesians 6:7 “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men.” And that’s the key, our service is not for men, but for the Lord! And my commitment that day was to do just that!

I watched my mother growing up always doing for others. And she seemed so happy to do it. I never quite understood it. I can say now that is a trait I am so proud to say I received from my mother. It's just a joy to do for others & watch their happiness. I get so much more Joy from doing for others than I do when something is done for me. Life is about loving, sharing & giving, it's a life I Enjoy. I know I am trully blessed in my life.
I also want you to know I am so glad I found Second Baptist. Sometimes on Sunday morning I wanna drive fast just to hurry up & hear what will be Shared that day. And you share the truth, No sugar coating things...That I really Like.

What a great story!
I love it when, "what WE want to do" quickly turns into "what GOD wants us to do."
Things just end up better that way.
