As a child and youth, my family always had family devotions, went to church when the door was open, spent all of our holidays with cousins, aunts, uncles & grandparents, and went on family vacations (some of our vacations were very cheap because there were 6 of us and on a pastor's salary).  We dreaded some of those events as kids & teenagers but my sisters, brother, and I have many fond memories tucked away. We will always remember the camping trips through most of the eastern states, sitting on the side of the road in our car while dad fixed a tire on the interstate, white water rafting through the Smokies, or sightseeing through New York City with a complete stranger that my dad met.  Most of us have family memories growing up - good or bad as they may be.  But my fear is that we get so busy doing life and having our kids involved in "extracurricular activities" that we don't take the time to make family memories with our kids.

This past year, I have been praying very diligently about how we at the church can provide activities for families as a whole.  I believe it is the parent's responsibility to "train up a child" and to create family experiences & devotions at home for their child and not leave it up to the church, school, or team coach.  In Duet. 6, God was giving commands to the Israelites as they were getting ready to enter the promised land.  vs. 5 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, ...soul, ...might ..... vs. 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way nd when you lie down and when you rise up.  vs. 8 and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontal on your forehead  vs. 9 and you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

When I was teaching school, I had a family that reserved every Friday night for family time.  I thought that was awesome and I have often tried to create this habit for my family as well.  It doesn't always happen but I am working on it. I wanted to create this kind of atmosphere for our families to experience.

This Friday night, May 20, I have provided an opportunity for you to create memories as a family.  We will be having family game night.  We will have 3 rotation rooms.  Each family will play games as a family, race against their parents in an obstacle course and twister game, and compete in "Minute to Win It" games.  It's going to be a lot of laughter, silliness, and memories of mom/dad/grandparents playing games with their kids.  We hope to see ya'll there!

(Please go to the calendar & click on family game night to sign up.)  Remember a family can be both parents, one parent, or grandparents.
